Reps Urge FG to Clear Blocked Waterways in FCT

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to urgently clear all blocked waterways in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Lawmakers expressed concern over the growing problem of blocked drainage systems, which they say contribute to flooding during the rainy season. They believe clearing these waterways will help prevent flooding and protect residents.

The appeal comes as many parts of Abuja continue to experience poor drainage, leading to waterlogging and damage to roads and properties. The lawmakers stressed that proper maintenance of waterways is essential for effective flood control and environmental protection in the capital city. They urged relevant government agencies to treat the matter as a priority.

Blocked waterways have been a long-standing issue in the FCT, often caused by waste dumping and lack of regular desilting. During heavy rains, these blockages usually result in flooding that affects homes, businesses, and major roads. The House of Representatives believes swift action is needed to avoid future disasters.

This directive is expected to push the Federal Government and FCT authorities to take immediate steps towards clearing and maintaining the drainage systems. Many residents have welcomed the move, hoping it will lead to better living conditions and reduced flooding in the capital.

As the rainy season approaches, the call by the lawmakers serves as a timely reminder of the importance of proper environmental management. Nigerians hope the Federal Government will respond quickly and ensure that all blocked waterways in the FCT are cleared to prevent loss of lives and property.
