Council of Legal Education Releases Updated List of 117 Accredited Universities Offering Law Programmes

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released an updated list of 117 universities approved to offer Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programmes in Nigeria, warning prospective students against enrolling in institutions that lack accreditation to run law programmes.

The updated list was published in a public notice shared on the council’s official Facebook page on Thursday. The notice, signed by the Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke Osho, stated that graduates of universities operating unapproved law programmes would not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School.

According to the council, students admitted into law programmes that have not received accreditation from the CLE will be barred from proceeding to the Nigerian Law School, a mandatory requirement for law graduates seeking to qualify for legal practice in Nigeria.

The council further cautioned universities against admitting students into law programmes without obtaining the necessary approval, noting that such actions violate the regulations governing legal education in the country and could attract sanctions under existing laws and policies.

The CLE explained that the publication of the updated list is intended to guide prospective students, parents, guardians and other stakeholders in making informed decisions regarding admission into law programmes.

As the statutory body responsible for regulating legal education and overseeing the Nigerian Law School, the Council of Legal Education accredits universities offering law programmes and ensures compliance with established standards for legal training. Established under the Legal Education (Consolidation) Act, the council also supervises the practical legal training required before graduates are called to the Nigerian Bar.
