NDLEA Uncovers Sophisticated Drug Smuggling Methods, Seizes N3.4 Billion Worth of Opioids

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dealt a significant blow to drug traffickers in Nigeria, uncovering a series of sophisticated methods used to conceal illicit substances.

In a recent operation, NDLEA operatives intercepted 36 parcels of cannabis concealed within tins of Cerelac baby food at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The tins, destined for the United Kingdom, had been meticulously tampered with, sealed at the top and loaded with drugs through the bottom, before being covered with infant cereal to avoid detection. The total weight of the seized cannabis was 18.5 kilograms.

In another major seizure, the NDLEA intercepted two containers of imported opioids with a street value of N4.3 billion at the Port Harcourt Ports complex, Onne, Rivers, and Tincan, Lagos State.

The breakdown of the seizures includes 168,000 bottles of codeine-based syrup worth N1.1 billion and 4.5 million pills of tramadol 225mg valued at N3.2 billion.

The NDLEA also discovered that drug traffickers had hidden opioids in chocolate tins, further highlighting the creative and deceptive methods used to smuggle illicit substances.

The agency’s efforts have resulted in the seizure of N3.4 billion worth of opioids, a significant blow to the drug trafficking trade in Nigeria.

These operations demonstrate the NDLEA’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and the innovative methods traffickers employ to smuggle illicit substances. The agency continues to enhance its surveillance and intelligence-gathering techniques to stay ahead of such criminal activities.
