Lammens: From Royal Antwerp to Premier League Signing of the Season

Manchester United goalkeeper, Senne Lammens has been named the Premier League Signing of the Season after a debut campaign at Old Trafford that defied every expectation attached to his arrival.

The 23-year-old Belgian shot-stopper, who joined United from Royal Antwerp in a deal worth an initial £18.1 million last summer, received the award following a vote involving fans, players, and managers, becoming arguably the biggest success story of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

When United signed Lammens on deadline day in September 2025, the reaction was far from unanimous approval. He had played just one full season at the top level of senior football and that was in the Belgian Pro League, outside Europe’s top five leagues. Even a club legend of the calibre of Peter Schmeichel admitted he had never heard of the goalkeeper and described the signing as a “hopeful” one. Yet the man who recommended him most vigorously, United’s chief goalkeeping scout Tony Coton himself a former goalkeeper at both Manchester clubs had watched Lammens closely and convinced director of football Jason Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell to move for him instead of Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, who had been the club’s primary target. That gamble has paid off in spectacular fashion.

Lammens kept eight clean sheets in 32 Premier League appearances this season, with United losing only four league matches in which he featured. His performances were defined by commanding shot-stopping, an assured presence at set-pieces handling crosses and corners with a composure that belied his inexperience at elite level and a calm, authoritative influence on the defensive unit in front of him. He brought much-needed stability to a position that had been a source of recurring embarrassment for the club across multiple seasons. Responding to the award, Lammens expressed his gratitude. “It is a special feeling to win this award in my first season in the Premier League. I want to thank my teammates, the coaching staff and the supporters for their belief in me throughout the campaign,” he said.

Lammens was not alone in catching the eye among United’s summer arrivals. Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko all scored double figures in the league, forming a fearsome attacking unit that contributed directly to United’s revival under manager Michael Carrick, who steered the club back into the Champions League for next season. But it was Lammens who stood tallest when the season’s individual honours were handed out, turning a low-profile, low-cost signing into the benchmark against which the rest of the division’s summer business was measured.
