FG Declares Two-Day Public Holiday for Eid-ul-Adha
The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays in commemoration of the Eid-ul-Adha celebration.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, the holidays were approved in recognition of the importance of the Islamic festival to Muslims in Nigeria and around the world.
The government congratulated Muslim faithful both within the country and in the diaspora, describing Eid-ul-Adha as a celebration that reflects sacrifice, obedience, and compassion.
The minister urged Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for national peace, unity, security and continued progress.
He also called on citizens to embrace peaceful coexistence, mutual understanding, and brotherhood during and after the celebrations.
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Eid-el-Kabir, is one of the major festivals observed by Muslims globally.
Meanwhile, movement of travellers has increased in several parts of the country, including Lagos, ahead of the holidays.
As part of efforts to ensure road safety during the celebration, the Federal Road Safety Corps in Kwara State said it had deployed 950 personnel across the state for traffic control and emergency response operations.
The command disclosed that patrol vehicles, ambulances, and a tow truck had been positioned at strategic locations to manage traffic and respond to emergencies during the festive period.
Motorists were also advised to obey traffic regulations and avoid offences such as speeding, dangerous driving, wrongful overtaking, overloading, and the use of mobile phones while driving.
