Container Truck Falls in Lagos, Crushes Commercial Bus, Critically Injures POS Operator
A fully loaded 40-foot container truck lost control and overturned along the service lane at Second Rainbow, inward Oshodi, crushing a commercial mini-shuttle bus and severely injuring a female Point of Sale (POS) operator.
The incident, which occurred near the Police Tactical Team Station, caused severe trauma and panic within the commercial area as the articulated vehicle veered off its path, fell on its side, and rammed into nearby roadside shops and businesses.
The female POS operator, who was transacting business under a roadside canopy when the crash occurred, sustained critical injuries to both legs.
Officers of the nearby Police Tactical Team rushed to the scene to rescue the trapped victim, immediately evacuating her to a nearby medical facility for urgent emergency intervention.
Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) promptly mobilized to the corridor to establish strategic traffic control, secure the area, and clear the wreckage. Working in coordination with other emergency responders, LASTMA deployed a heavy-duty recovery tow truck to evacuate the overturned articulated vehicle and the badly damaged minibus from the active lane, preventing a total gridlock.
The truck driver was apprehended at the scene by traffic officials and handed over to security operatives from the Orile-Iganmu Division of the Nigeria Police Force for comprehensive documentation, preliminary investigation, and potential prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, strongly admonished operators of articulated vehicles, fleet managers, and logistics firms to institutionalize strict mechanical checks on heavy-duty trucks—particularly braking systems and critical safety components before putting them on public roads. He warned that negligence in routine vehicle maintenance continues to pose a severe threat to human lives and public infrastructure, urging transport operators to strictly adhere to established safety guidelines.
