Amusan Clocks Season’s Best as Enekwechi Opens Diamond League Account at Xiamen
Nigeria’s sprint hurdles world record holder, Tobi Amusan delivered her finest performance of the 2026 outdoor season on Saturday, clocking a season’s best of 12.28 seconds to finish second in the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Xiamen, China while compatriot Chukwuebuka Enekwechi made his opening appearance on the circuit with a fifth-place finish in the men’s shot put at the Egret Stadium.
Amusan’s run represented a clear step forward in her early-season form, improving on her previous season’s best of 12.41 seconds set in Shanghai a week earlier and further underlining her growing sharpness ahead of the championship season. However, she faced an American rival in blistering form, as Paris 2024 Olympic champion Masai Russell stormed to victory in a stunning 12.14 seconds a Diamond League record, American record and the second-fastest time in the history of the event. Russell’s performance came within just two hundredths of a second of Amusan’s own world record of 12.12, set in Oregon in 2022, and consolidated the American’s position as the second-fastest woman ever over the distance.
“I’ve been saying all year that I’m going to break the world record. I don’t know when it’s going to happen, but I keep getting closer and closer,” Russell said after the race.
Behind Amusan in second, Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas took third in a national record of 12.37 seconds. Tokyo Olympic medallist Megan Simmonds of Jamaica came fourth, world champion Ditaji Kambundji of Switzerland placed fifth, reigning Diamond League champion Ackera Nugent finished sixth, and two-time world champion Danielle Williams was seventh in a tightly contested field that underscored the depth and quality of the women’s hurdles event on the global circuit. Amusan’s run was notably her second straight podium finish in the Diamond League in the space of a week, and with the Commonwealth Games, the inaugural Ultimate Athletics Championships and the World Athletics Final all on the horizon, the Nigerian is clearly building towards a strong second half of the season.
In the field, Enekwechi opened his 2026 Diamond League account with a best throw of 21.14 metres to finish fifth in the men’s shot put. The African record holder entered the season targeting a third consecutive appearance in the Diamond League Final and will look to accumulate qualifying points across the remaining legs of the circuit. The event was won emphatically by Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell, who set a national record of 22.34 metres to claim the top spot, with several other world-class throwers also in the field. Enekwechi’s fifth-place finish on his season debut gives him a platform to build from as the campaign progresses.
The Xiamen meeting itself was one of the most spectacular of the Diamond League season so far, with teenage Chinese javelin sensation Yan Ziyi also producing the second-longest throw in history a Diamond League record of 71.74 metres on her season debut, bettered only by Barbora Špotáková’s world record of 72.28 metres set in 2008. The meeting featured eight world-leading performances across its disciplines, setting a high watermark for a season that will reach its climax with the circuit’s Final in Zurich later in the year.
