APC Confirms Bomai as Consensus Candidate for Yobe South Senate Seat

Senator Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai, who withdrew from the Yobe State governorship race earlier this week, has been affirmed as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate for the Yobe South Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Senator Bomai, a governorship aspirant and leader of the four aggrieved aspirants who rejected the endorsement of Baba Malam Wali as the APC consensus candidate for governor, announced his withdrawal from the 2027 governorship race on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

The decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders, elders, and political associates. Daily Trust reports that the senator took the decision after a closed-door meeting with Governor Mai Mala Buni at the Government House in Damaturu.

The meeting that affirmed Bomai as the party’s senatorial consensus candidate took place at the Federal College of Education Multipurpose Hall in Potiskum Local Government Area. It was conducted by the Speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly, Hon. Buba Mashio, in the presence of APC chieftains, youth groups, and supporters from across the district.

Party officials stated that the decision to adopt Bomai was reached after extensive consultations aimed at avoiding internal divisions and ensuring a smooth political process ahead of the elections.

Speaking shortly after the affirmation, Senator Bomai expressed gratitude to party leaders and supporters for the confidence reposed in him.

“I want to sincerely thank our party leaders, elders, stakeholders, and supporters across Yobe South Senatorial District for the support and confidence they have reposed in me,” he said.

He also commended fellow aspirants and party loyalists for embracing peace and unity throughout the consultation process, stating that placing collective interest above personal ambition would further strengthen the APC ahead of future elections.

If re-elected, Senator Bomai would return to the National Assembly for a third term — a feat yet to be achieved by any senator from Yobe South Senatorial District.

The district comprises four local government areas: Fune, Fika, Nangere, and Potiskum.
