Iran National Team Heads to Turkey for Friendlies, US Visas
Iran’s national football team has departed for Turkey to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The squad travelled to Antalya on Monday for training and to play final friendly matches.
This trip is also important because the players will use the time to complete their visa applications for the United States.
The team consists of 22 domestic-based players and their coaching staff. Head coach Amir Ghalenoei confirmed the plans, noting that visa procedures will be handled while in Turkey. This step is necessary as Iran and the United States do not have direct diplomatic relations, making the visa process more complex.
Despite recent tensions and conflicts between Iran and the US, the team is determined to participate in the World Cup. FIFA has insisted that the tournament will go ahead as planned, and US officials have said the players are welcome. Iran will be based in Tucson, Arizona, during the competition.
The squad is scheduled to play at least one friendly match against The Gambia on May 29. They hope to secure another game while in Turkey. These warm-up matches will help the team fine-tune their tactics before facing strong opponents in Group G, including New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt.
This development shows Iran’s commitment to football even during difficult times. Fans are eagerly following the team’s preparations as the World Cup draws closer. Many hope the trip to Turkey will go smoothly and pave the way for a successful campaign in the United States.
