World Record Holder Amusan Shrugs Off Jet Lag to Finish Third at Diamond League Opener

Tobi Amusan delivered a gutsy third-place finish in the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the opening leg of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League season in Shanghai/Keqiao, China, on Saturday, clocking a season’s best of 12.41 seconds just hours after arriving in the country off the back of a gruelling continental campaign.

The Nigerian world record holder, who had won gold at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, only days earlier, flew directly to China and stepped onto the track battling the effects of jet lag and physical fatigue. Her podium finish, under those demanding circumstances, was a testament to both her extraordinary resilience and the enduring quality that has made her one of the most formidable hurdlers in the sport’s history.

Olympic champion Masai Russell of the United States put on a commanding display to win the race in a meeting record and world-leading time of 12.25 seconds, improving on her own previous world lead of 12.40. Russell, who showed tremendous composure over the final hurdles, was emphatic about her intentions coming into the season.

Bahamian world indoor champion Devynne Charlton, who burst out of the blocks and controlled much of the early stages, held on for second place in 12.38 seconds a national record and personal best that underlined just how competitive the race was from start to finish.

Amusan, whose world record of 12.12 seconds set in 2022 remains the fastest time ever run in the event, had arrived in Shanghai that very morning. She was candid about the physical toll the schedule had taken on her, describing jet lag and exhaustion as her biggest obstacles on the day.

Yet she still managed to significantly improve on her previous season’s best of 12.84 seconds, set during her victorious outing in Accra. “To be honest, I am just incredibly excited to have finished in the top three,” Amusan said. “My biggest challenge today was definitely the jet lag and the fatigue. I just arrived this morning and was exhausted.”

Despite the difficult circumstances, the three-time Diamond League final winner already has her sights trained firmly on the bigger picture. With the World Athletics Championships on the horizon, Amusan made clear that Saturday’s performance was merely the opening chapter of a season she intends to dominate. “Everyone is looking forward to the World Championship, so am I,” she added.

The Shanghai/Keqiao meeting marked the first of 15 legs on the 2026 Diamond League calendar, with the season concluding at the final in Brussels in September. For Amusan, a podium finish in her season opener achieved while running on empty will only fuel expectations of what she can produce once fully rested and in full stride.
