Ex-Power Minister Saleh Mamman Jailed 75 Years for Fraud
A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, to 75 years imprisonment after finding him guilty on all 12 counts of fraud and money laundering filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Wednesday, holding that the former minister diverted public funds estimated at ₦33.8 billion during his time in office under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The court sentenced Mamman to seven years imprisonment on 10 counts, while he received separate jail terms of three years and two years on other counts. The sentences are to run concurrently, bringing the total jail term to 75 years.
The judge also ordered the forfeiture of several assets linked to the former minister, including luxury properties in Abuja and large sums of foreign currency believed to be proceeds of unlawful activities.
According to the prosecution, the funds were allegedly diverted from projects under the Federal Ministry of Power and laundered through multiple bank accounts and bureau de change operators.
The EFCC told the court that investigations uncovered extensive financial transactions tied to contracts and government allocations meant for critical power infrastructure projects across the country.
Mamman, who served as Minister of Power between 2019 and 2021, was initially arraigned by the anti-graft agency on charges bordering on conspiracy, money laundering, and illegal diversion of public funds.
The conviction is being seen as one of the most significant anti-corruption judgments involving a former cabinet member in recent years, reinforcing ongoing efforts by authorities to strengthen accountability in public office.
