Most Federal Colleges of Education Now Award Degrees Alongside NCE
Most federal colleges of education in Nigeria have started awarding Bachelor of Education degrees together with the National Certificate of Education (NCE).
This development was announced by the Minister of Education. The change is part of efforts to improve the quality of teacher training in the country.
The new policy allows students to earn both the NCE and a degree in the same institution. This is expected to produce better-qualified teachers who can compete favourably in the education sector. Many stakeholders believe the dual certification will raise the standard of teaching and learning in Nigerian schools.
The Minister explained that the reform is aimed at addressing long-standing issues in teacher education. With this development, colleges of education will now operate more like degree-awarding institutions while still maintaining their traditional NCE programmes. This is seen as a major upgrade in the nation’s education system.
Parents and students have welcomed the news, as it gives more opportunities for higher qualifications without changing institutions. Education experts say the move will help reduce the gap between colleges of education and universities in terms of qualification and recognition.
This reform is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen the education sector. As more colleges adopt the dual award system, Nigerians hope it will lead to improved teaching quality and better outcomes for students across the country.
