FG Threatens Action Against Telecom Operators Over Poor Services

The Federal Government has warned telecommunications operators in Nigeria to urgently improve the quality of service being delivered to subscribers or risk regulatory sanctions.

The warning follows growing complaints from users over persistent network issues, including dropped calls, slow internet speeds, and poor coverage across major networks operated by companies such as MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, and Globacom.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, said the government has implemented key reforms aimed at stabilising the telecom sector, including policy support and measures to improve operators’ financial capacity and infrastructure development.

According to him, with these reforms now in place, telecom companies are expected to take full responsibility for improving service delivery to millions of subscribers nationwide.

He stressed that the government would no longer tolerate poor performance, noting that regulatory bodies have been empowered to enforce service standards without interference.

The conditions required for improved service delivery have now been established. Operators must now ensure Nigerians receive value for money in terms of network quality and reliability,” he said.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the industry regulator, has also been mandated to intensify monitoring of service quality and ensure compliance with established benchmarks. The commission has previously introduced quality-of-service standards and consumer protection measures, including compensation guidelines for affected subscribers.

Industry observers say the persistent challenges in the sector are linked to infrastructure gaps, rising data demand, and ongoing investment pressures on operators.

Despite these challenges, the government insists that telecom firms must act swiftly to improve performance or face enforcement actions, including possible sanctions.
