Katsina Approves ₦3.8bn Loan To Secure 3,890 Hajj Slots
The Katsina State Government has approved a ₦3.8 billion loan facility to secure 3,890 Hajj slots for intending pilgrims from the state for the 2026 pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda disclosed this during the official farewell ceremony for pilgrims held in Katsina, stating that the intervention became necessary to meet the payment deadline set by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).
According to the governor, the state faced financial constraints that threatened its ability to retain the allocated slots, prompting the government to secure the loan to prevent the loss of the opportunities for intending pilgrims.
Radda said the approval ensured that Katsina retained all its allocated slots and avoided the forfeiture of hundreds of spaces that could have affected prospective pilgrims from the state.
The governor also announced welfare support measures for pilgrims, including sponsorship of Hadaya sacrifices and a $500 allowance for each pilgrim to assist with basic expenses during their stay in Saudi Arabia.
He further disclosed that over 200 officials had been deployed to provide medical care, logistics, and spiritual guidance to ensure a smooth Hajj operation. Radda urged the pilgrims to pray for peace, unity, and improved security in Katsina State and Nigeria while in the Holy Land.
He also advised them to conduct themselves responsibly and uphold the image of the state throughout the pilgrimage. Meanwhile, officials of the Katsina State Pilgrims Welfare Board said the intervention helped the state avoid losing about 500 Hajj slots due to delays in payment and other logistical challenges.
The development comes amid rising Hajj costs across Nigeria, largely driven by foreign exchange fluctuations and increasing operational expenses, forcing several state governments to introduce support measures for intending pilgrims.
