Nigeria May Reject World Bank Loans Over Delays, Says Accountant General
The Accountant General of the Federation, Dr. Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi has said Nigeria may begin to reject loans from the World Bank if there are continued delays in releasing the funds.
He made the remark while expressing frustration over the slow pace at which some international loans are being processed and disbursed.
According to him, the government is tired of waiting for too long before loans that have already been approved are released. He noted that such delays affect important projects and development plans in the country.
The statement shows that the government is becoming more selective about accepting loans with difficult conditions.
Many Nigerians have welcomed the idea of being more careful with foreign loans. Some believe the country should focus on generating more internal revenue instead of depending heavily on borrowing.
Others argue that loans are still needed for major infrastructure projects but should come with better terms and faster approval.
This position comes as the government continues to manage the country’s debt profile carefully. The Accountant General’s comment sends a strong signal that Nigeria wants quicker results from international financial partners. It may also encourage the World Bank and other lenders to improve their processes.
As discussions continue, many hope this stance will lead to better negotiation and more beneficial agreements for the country.
The development highlights the need for Nigeria to balance borrowing with fiscal discipline and self-reliance in funding national projects.
