Tension has gripped agrarian communities in Ondo State following a violent raid by armed assailants on a government-supported farmland. The attackers, who reportedly emerged from nearby forests, unleashed a volley of sporadic gunfire that sent workers fleeing for safety before setting a government-owned tractor on fire.

Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic environment as the gunmen moved through the fields, targeting both equipment and personnel. While many workers managed to escape into the dense bush, several others were not as fortunate and were forcibly taken by the group. The assailants reportedly retreated into the forest with their captives before security operatives could arrive at the location.

The burning of the tractor, a critical piece of infrastructure for the state’s agricultural development program, has been viewed by local leaders as a direct assault on the region’s food security. Thick plumes of smoke from the charred remains of the machinery could be seen from neighboring villages, serving as a grim reminder of the escalating insecurity facing farmers in the South-West.

The Ondo State Police Command and the State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, have reportedly deployed tactical teams to the area to track the kidnappers and rescue the abducted workers. This latest incident adds to a troubling pattern of farm-related attacks in the state, which has left many rural residents hesitant to return to their lands during the peak of the planting season.
