Ex-Skye Bank Chairman, Tunde Ayeni Remanded in Kuje Prison Over Alleged N8bn Fraud
A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of the former Chairman of the defunct Skye Bank Plc, Tunde Ayeni, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
This follows his arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over his alleged involvement in an N8 billion fraud case.
During the proceedings, the prosecution detailed allegations involving the misappropriation of bank funds and various financial irregularities that contributed to the eventual collapse of the financial institution. Ayeni, who has faced multiple legal battles regarding his tenure at the bank, pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
The trial judge ordered his remand pending the hearing and determination of his bail application. The court’s decision marks a significant step in the long-running investigation into the management of Skye Bank (now Polaris Bank), which required a massive government intervention to protect depositors’ funds.
Defense counsel argued for administrative bail, citing his client’s previous cooperation with investigators, but the court opted for remand to ensure a structured judicial process.
The case has been adjourned to a later date for the commencement of the trial and a formal ruling on the bail request.
The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to pursuing high-profile financial crimes to a logical conclusion, emphasizing that the integrity of the banking sector is paramount. This latest development has reignited public interest in the accountability of corporate leaders within Nigeria’s financial landscape.
