Taiwan’s Leadership Reaffirms Ties with Eswatini Amid Beijing’s Isolation Campaign

In a bold assertion of its remaining international standing, Taiwan’s leadership has concluded a high-profile visit to the Kingdom of Eswatini, the island’s sole remaining diplomatic ally on the African continent.

The visit, which took place despite intense pressure and public condemnation from the People’s Republic of China (PRC), was framed by Taipei as a mission to solidify a “steadfast partnership” based on mutual development and shared democratic values.

The trip comes at a time when Beijing has aggressively ramped up its “Race to Zero” strategy, a multi-pronged diplomatic effort aimed at poaching Taiwan’s few remaining allies to eliminate its international legitimacy (Shattuck, 2020). Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, has remained a holdout in a region where every other nation has switched recognition to the PRC.

During the visit, Taiwanese officials emphasized that Eswatini’s unwavering support provides “confidence and strength” to the island as it navigates increasing cross-strait tensions.

For Taiwan, maintaining its relationship with Eswatini is functionally essential for its “pragmatic diplomacy” strategy. Because Taiwan is restricted within the formal international system, it relies heavily on its few formal allies to advocate for its participation in global bodies like the United Nations and the World Health Organization.

Beijing, however, views these visits as a violation of the “One China” principle and has historically responded with increased military activity near the Taiwan Strait and “dollar diplomacy” aimed at luring away Taipei’s partners with promises of massive infrastructure investment.

The visit serves as a pointed message to the international community that Taiwan will not “succumb to coercion” (Shattuck, 2020). While Beijing has publicly called for Eswatini to “follow the international trend” and switch recognition, the Kingdom has reaffirmed its 50-plus-year bond with Taipei.

Experts note that as China’s influence in Africa grows through the Belt and Road Initiative, Eswatini’s position becomes increasingly unique. For Taiwan, the Kingdom represents more than just a vote in international forums; it is a vital bridge to a continent where Taipei seeks to maintain unofficial trade and cultural ties despite its limited formal recognition.
