Trump Visits The Villages, Florida, Greeted by Overflow Crowd, ‘USA’ Chants”
President Trump made his first trip outside the White House since an attempted assassination last week, visiting the conservative Florida retirement community of The Villages on May 1.
The event drew an overflow crowd, with supporters waiting for hours under the Florida sun, eager to hear him speak.
Trump opened by addressing security concerns head-on, turning the location into a punchline: “They want me to be in a secure place. I said, ‘What’s a more secure place than The Villages?'”. The remark drew applause from a crowd that a reporter described as “roaring, supportive”.
The 90-minute speech focused heavily on economic policies aimed at seniors. Trump highlighted his administration’s tax cuts on Social Security benefits, declaring, “No tax on Social Security — it’s done”. He also promoted newly expanded Medicare coverage for weight-loss drugs, saying seniors would pay just “$50 a month” for them.
On foreign policy, Trump defended his military action against Iran, telling the crowd:
“We’re in a war because we cannot let lunatics have a nuclear weapon”, a line that prompted loud “USA” chants from the overflow area inside the high school gymnasium.
The visit underscores the political stakes ahead of November’s midterm elections. With approval ratings at 34% according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, Trump is working to rally a base that remains loyal. At the same time, the community itself is increasingly polarized: Democratic Club president Bill Knudson told the BBC that while supporters scrambled for tickets, Democrats were busy making protest signs. A “No Kings” protest last month against Trump drew nearly 7,000 participants across two Villages locations, while one Democratic resident noted that “everything you talk about might have a political consequence”.
Michael Strain, an economist at the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute, offered this analysis:
“The American people have made it very clear that they’re very concerned about affordability issues. But he does bear responsibility for not responding to the concerns of voters with a policy agenda that could plausibly address those concerns”.
