Desmond Elliot Seeks Fourth Term in Lagos Assembly, Cites Experience, Continuity
Nollywood actor turned politician, Desmond Elliot, has officially declared his intention to seek a fourth term in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Representing Surulere Constituency 1, Elliot argued that his pursuit of another term is rooted in the need for legislative continuity. He emphasized that his experience is vital for securing further developmental projects for his constituents, dismissing claims that he has spent enough time in office.
Addressing the rumours and opposition surrounding his ambition, Elliot labeled the negative narratives as mere political tactics aimed at distracting from his record. He remained firm in his focus on governance and grassroots development, stating, “Well, they could have put a name or number. So, it’s just propaganda. You know it’s political propaganda.”
He maintains that his primary goal is to ensure the growth of his constituency through seasoned leadership.
The lawmaker highlighted that legislative seniority provides a distinct advantage when it came to lobbying for resources and influential committee positions. According to Elliot, a ranking member has a better chance of bringing home significant benefits compared to a newcomer. He noted, **“The longer you stay, the better you become in experience for the state and for your people.”
Elliot elaborated on the specific benefits that come with experience, noting that certain infrastructure and job opportunities are more accessible to veteran legislators. He explained his strategy for the upcoming term by saying, “When you become a ranking member, what you get coming for your people is way better than when you start. As a ranking member, you get more, better committees and better development for your people.”
Beyond physical infrastructure, Elliot revealed plans to push for institutional reforms, specifically focusing on the establishment of an Institute of Legislative Studies. He expressed a desire to integrate civic education into the early stages of the Nigerian school system.
He stated, “I want to push certain things legislatively. I want to make sure younger kids begin to learn legislature right from primary and secondary school.”
His vision also includes a return to value-based social programs and extracurricular activities to help rebuild the moral fabric of society. He intends to strengthen the Lagos State Orientation Agency to promote cultural and ethical values among the youth. Elliot said, “I want to push the narrative of bringing back courses like Boys’ Brigade, Girls’ Guide and extracurricular activities that help shape society.”
Reflecting on his past achievements, the lawmaker pointed to successful drainage and environmental interventions that have significantly reduced flooding in Surulere. He argued that replacing him now would reset the progress made, as a new representative would have to start from scratch. Defending his length of service, he remarked, “Three terms is great. But guess what? Another term is fantastic.”
Elliot cited his personal contributions to the welfare of his constituents, including funding major medical procedures and improving local healthcare and education.
He shared an example of his commitment to the people, saying, “I’ve even spent N75 million on someone just to repair her spine. It doesn’t even matter to me. The important thing is letting people feel the love.”
