Army Arrests Security Operative Over Fake Kwara Kidnap Threat

A member of a local security outfit in Kwara State has been arrested for allegedly authoring and circulating a false kidnap threat targeting Venra Community in Kaiama Local Government Area.

The suspect, identified as Zakari Usman, was apprehended by the Nigerian Army after security operatives traced an anonymous letter warning of an impending abduction to him. The letter, which had circulated for about two weeks, claimed that terrorists planned to kidnap five residents of the community.

Investigations revealed that the individual who initially discovered and distributed the letter was the same person responsible for writing it.

Usman, also known as “Minister,” is a native of Venra and reportedly a member of the Nigeria Forest Security Services (NFSS).

Security sources indicated that the suspect may have acted with the intent to create panic and potentially exploit the situation for financial gain, including securing a paid security contract under false pretences.

When contacted, Acting Information Officer of Savannah Shield, Captain J. Yaya, declined to confirm or deny the development but urged responsible reporting on security matters.

In a related development, the Nigerian Army has intensified efforts to improve operational effectiveness through the adoption of a standardised evaluation framework. The Army Headquarters Department of Standards and Evaluation recently held a sensitisation seminar in Abuja to promote compliance with established benchmarks and strengthen institutional performance.

Representing the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, Major General Everest Okoro described the initiative as a key step toward enhancing professionalism and accountability within the force.

He noted that the department serves as the Army’s quality assurance arm, responsible for assessing combat readiness and operational activities.

Separately, the Army has also engaged community leaders in Southern Kaduna in a bid to prevent conflict ahead of the 2026 farming season. A one-day summit convened by the General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, brought together traditional rulers, religious leaders and youth representatives from five local government areas.

The forum focused on promoting peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders, with stakeholders emphasising dialogue and mutual understanding as critical to sustaining stability and improving agricultural productivity.
