Fenerbahce Sack Tedesco After Derby Humiliation Ends Title Dream

Fenerbahce have parted ways with head coach, Domenico Tedesco following a humiliating 3-0 defeat to arch-rivals Galatasaray in the Istanbul derby, a result that effectively ended their hopes of winning the Turkish Super Lig title this season.

The club’s board of directors convened in the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s loss at Rams Park and confirmed Tedesco’s dismissal on Monday, along with the departures of sporting director Devin Özek and football coordinator Berke Çelebi. Assistant coach Zeki Murat Göle will take charge of the team for the remaining three fixtures of the season.

The defeat was as damaging as it was comprehensive. Fenerbahce missed a first-half penalty and were then dismantled in the second half, conceding three goals without reply through Victor Osimhen, Baris Alper Yilmaz, and Lucas Torreira. The result opened a seven-point gap between the two Istanbul clubs with only three games left to play, rendering the title race effectively over.

Warning signs had been building for weeks. A 2-2 home draw against Rizespor, in which Fenerbahce squandered a late lead, had already rattled confidence within the club and exposed divisions in the boardroom over Tedesco’s future. The derby had been framed as a final opportunity to save his tenure, and the manner of the defeat left the board with little choice.

It is a bitter end to a spell that had promised much. Tedesco guided Fenerbahce to the Turkish Super Cup in January 2026, defeating Galatasaray 2-0 in the final to end an 11-year wait for the trophy. Across 45 matches in charge, he recorded 26 wins, 12 draws, and seven defeats a respectable record that will nonetheless be overshadowed by the failure to mount a serious title challenge when it mattered most.

Galatasaray, meanwhile, march on towards a fourth consecutive league championship.
