Sesko, Casemiro Fire United Past Brentford as Fernandes Closes In on History

Manchester United moved to the brink of Champions League qualification with a 2-1 win over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday evening. Goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko doing the damage before a late Mathias Jensen strike proved nothing more than a consolation for the visitors.

It was Casemiro who broke the deadlock in the 11th minute, the veteran Brazilian midfielder craning his neck to nod home from a Bruno Fernandes corner, directing the ball beyond Caoimhín Kelleher from a tight angle despite a desperate challenge from Michael Kayode. Sesko then sealed the points before the interval, latching onto a perfectly-timed pass from Fernandes and slotting calmly past Kelleher to put United two goals to the good heading into the break.

Jensen pulled one back for Brentford deep into the second half, but the result was never truly in doubt.

The victory moves Michael Carrick’s side 11 points clear of sixth-placed Brighton with four games remaining, all but guaranteeing a top-five finish and a return to the UEFA Champions League next season. United have now won nine of their 13 Premier League matches since Carrick took the helm, a remarkable turnaround in fortunes.

Once again, the evening belonged in large part to Bruno Fernandes, whose assist for Sesko’s goal was his 19th of the Premier League season moving him one away from equalling the all-time single-season assist record of 20, jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

The Portuguese captain, who did not register his first assist of the campaign until October, has produced an extraordinary run of form in 2026, and with four games still to play, history beckons.
