Democrats Regain Control of US House as NBC Projects Victory in 2026 Midterm Elections
The Democratic Party has won control of the United States House of Representatives in the November 3 midterm elections, according to projections by NBC News, ending the Republican Party’s majority in the lower chamber of Congress.
The projected victory will give Democrats greater influence over legislative activities and provide a significant check on President Donald Trump’s administration during the remaining two years of his presidency.
NBC News estimates that Democrats will secure approximately 244 seats in the 435-member House, comfortably exceeding the 218 seats required to obtain a majority. The projection could still change slightly as outstanding votes are counted.
The Republicans had maintained control of the House since 2023, but their narrow majority faced challenges during the election as voters considered issues including the economy, immigration, tariffs and the administration’s handling of the conflict involving Iran.
All 435 seats in the House were contested in Tuesday’s election, making the outcome a major test of public support for Trump’s second administration.
With the projected victory, Democrats are expected to take control of key congressional committees, influence legislative proceedings and exercise greater oversight of the executive branch.
The party’s return to the majority could also pave the way for congressional investigations into policies and decisions taken by the Trump administration.
Meanwhile, the battle for control of the Senate remained a separate contest, with NBC News yet to project a winner at the time of its initial House announcement.
The development marks a shift in the balance of political power in Washington, with Democrats preparing to assume leadership of the House when the new Congress begins in January 2027.
