Spurs Pile More Misery on Depleted Chelsea as Palmer Is Sent Off in Stamford Bridge Upset

Tottenham Hotspur stunned Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

The visitors won a bruising London derby with an own goal from debutant goalkeeper Mike Penders and a late solo strike from Mathys Tel. It ended a long wait for Spurs, who had lost their last six league meetings with Chelsea and had not won at the Bridge in more than eight years.

Chelsea were without striker Joao Pedro, who was not even on the bench. He is their top scorer this season, with five goals and three assists, and the club said he had picked up an injury that is still being assessed. Pedro had been managing a knee problem, and manager Xabi Alonso did not explain his absence in detail.

Geovany Quenda started in his place and made his first Premier League start, alongside Penders, who also made his league debut. Emiliano Martinez is out for several weeks after surgery on a fractured jaw.

The first hour was scrappy and short on quality, with few clear chances. Omar Marmoush failed to make the most of a perfect cut-back from Andrew Robertson. Tel also forced a save from Penders but was flagged offside.

Tempers rose as the match went on, with several bookings, including Cole Palmer, who survived a flash of aggression towards Spurs’ Joao Palhinha-less midfield and was fortunate not to be punished with a straight red, according to Gary Neville on Sky Sports.

The game turned in the 77th minute. Penders came for a Tottenham corner, got under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke, and punched the ball into his own net. Three minutes later Palmer was shown a second yellow card for a reckless challenge, leaving Chelsea with ten men. Neville said Palmer had “lost his head”.

Tel sealed it in the 87th minute. He raced away down the left, cut inside as Chelsea backed off, and drove a low shot into the bottom corner. Roberto De Zerbi sprinted down the touchline to celebrate with the travelling fans.

It was a second straight league win for Spurs, who had been underdogs on the night. Chelsea, who won 2-0 at Everton last weekend, now face worries over Pedro’s fitness and a possible suspension for Palmer.
