Abuja Health Experts Advocate Stronger Policies To Support Cancer Survivors

Healthcare professionals and advocates in Abuja have called for stronger policies and improved support systems to address the challenges faced by cancer survivors in the country.

The call was made during a health forum organized to raise awareness on cancer care and survivorship, where stakeholders deliberated on the physical, emotional and financial difficulties that survivors encounter even after treatment.

According to the experts, while significant attention is often given to cancer diagnosis and treatment, little is done to support survivors as they navigate life after recovery. They noted that many survivors battle stigma, psychological trauma, loss of livelihood and lack of access to follow up care.

Speaking at the event, one of the lead speakers emphasized the need for government at all levels to develop comprehensive cancer survivorship programmes that include mental health support, routine medical check ups, reintegration into the workforce and community based care.

She explained that cancer is not just a medical condition but a life altering experience that requires sustained care and empathy. She added that without proper support structures, many survivors risk relapse, depression and social isolation.

Other participants at the forum called for increased funding for cancer care, expansion of health insurance to cover cancer treatment and post treatment services, and greater public enlightenment to eliminate myths surrounding the disease.

The experts also urged private sector organizations and non governmental bodies to partner with government to establish support centres where survivors can access counselling, vocational training and peer support groups.

They stressed that improving the quality of life for cancer survivors should be a national priority, adding that with the right policies and collective action, Nigeria can build a more compassionate and responsive healthcare system for all.

The forum ended with a renewed commitment by stakeholders to continue advocacy and push for policies that prioritize both cancer prevention and survivorship care.
