2027 Elections: Ogun Police Pledge Security for INEC Personnel, Materials

The Ogun State Police Command has pledged to strengthen security around the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), assuring the commission of adequate protection for its personnel, facilities and electoral materials ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, gave the assurance during a visit to the Ogun State INEC office in Abeokuta on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, where he met with the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Feyijimi Saseyi.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the police and INEC to ensure a peaceful and secure electoral process.

Ojajuni, who inspected the commission’s premises, described INEC as a vital institution in Nigeria’s democratic system and stressed the importance of sustained cooperation between both organisations.

“From now until the end of the 2027 General Elections, the INEC office will become our second office,” the commissioner said.

He explained that the command would adopt intelligence-driven policing, early identification of security threats, information sharing and coordinated deployment of personnel to safeguard electoral officials, voters, election materials and facilities.

The police commissioner added that all security operations would be conducted professionally, impartially and in accordance with the law.

He also recalled that the command had organised a security workshop in Abeokuta involving security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to improve preparedness for the forthcoming elections.

According to him, INEC participated in the engagement, which provided an opportunity for stakeholders to strengthen coordination and address election-related security concerns.

In her response, Saseyi welcomed the police commissioner’s visit and expressed INEC’s willingness to collaborate with the police and other stakeholders to deliver credible elections.

She said the commission remained committed to transparency and accountability throughout the electoral process.

Ojajuni urged political parties, candidates, their supporters and other stakeholders to comply with electoral laws and avoid violence, intimidation and other activities capable of disrupting the elections.

He also called on residents to report credible security threats promptly through the nearest police station or the command’s established communication channels.

The commissioner cautioned the public against circulating unverified information that could undermine security or create unnecessary tension.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to working with INEC, other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to protect democratic institutions and ensure a peaceful electoral process.

It further urged residents to reject electoral violence and cooperate with lawful security measures as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
