One Killed, Several Injured in Roller Coaster Incident at US Theme Park

One person was killed and several others injured after an incident on a roller coaster at a theme park in the US state of Georgia on Monday.

The accident occurred at Six Flags Over Georgia, though officials have not yet confirmed exactly how the person died or how the others were hurt.

Cobb County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid said detectives from the county’s major crimes unit were investigating the circumstances. She confirmed that one person had died, others were injured, and next of kin had been notified. In a statement, she described the event as a terrible tragedy and expressed sympathy for the family who lost a loved one, as well as for the patrons and employees who witnessed it.

A Six Flags spokesperson said the park and local authorities responded immediately and were fully cooperating with the investigation. The company expressed deep sadness over the guest incident.

Following the event, Six Flags temporarily closed nine similar roller coasters across six of its parks out of an abundance of caution. Local media identified the ride involved as the Goliath roller coaster, which reaches top speeds of 70 miles per hour and heights of 200 feet.

The incident comes after Six Flags decided last month to permanently shut down a popular roller coaster at its California theme park after dozens of people claimed to have suffered brain damage while riding it. Investigations into the Georgia accident are ongoing.
