Senegal Defeat Sand Eagles on Penalties After 4-4 Draw in Kaduna

Nigeria’s Sand Eagles lost 2-0 on penalties to Senegal on Monday after a 4-4 draw in their second friendly at the Murtala Muhammed Square beach soccer arena in Kaduna.

Taiwo Adams scored twice. Emeka Ogbonna and Fayowole Egan-Osi also scored. Nigeria did not convert in the shootout. Senegal, the defending African champions, took the tie.

The result followed Saturday’s 6-4 defeat in the first friendly. Abdullahi Hassan scored all four of Nigeria’s goals that day and was named man of the match.

Senegal’s goals came from Laye Diagne, Mamadou Sylla, who scored a hat-trick, Ninou Jean-Paul Diatta and Asane Ba.

Coach Abdullahi Isa had billed the series as a test before Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations qualifying against Ghana. The first leg is in Kaduna on Saturday 10 October. The return is in Accra on 17 October.

Senegal will host the finals as defending champions, from 7 to 15 November, and used the Kaduna games as part of their own build-up. Nigeria had been out of competitive international beach soccer for about two years before the two friendlies.
