IGP Approves Fresh Probe Into Circumstances Surrounding Mohbad’s Death
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved a request by the family of late singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, for a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, disclosed this in a statement dated September 29, 2026, clarifying that the police investigation remains ongoing despite the recent dismissal of a separate case by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to Ogungbe, the family submitted its petition to the Inspector-General of Police on April 14, 2026, while the document was formally received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7.
The petition reportedly highlighted concerns about inconsistencies in the earlier investigation and requested a comprehensive forensic examination of the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
Ogungbe said the IGP subsequently approved the petition and directed the Lagos State Police Command to act on it.
He added that the matter was assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau, who have since commenced engagements with the family’s representatives.
The lawyer said a representative of the Aloba family had been invited by the new investigative team and had participated in the ongoing process.
He said the family had continued to cooperate with the investigators and follow developments in the case.
The clarification came after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026 on September 25.
Ogungbe stressed that the suit was distinct from the petition submitted by the family to the police and was not filed by the Aloba family or on its behalf.
He therefore urged the public not to interpret the court’s dismissal of the suit as an end to the separate police investigation initiated following the family’s petition.
The family called on the police to handle the fresh investigation with diligence, independence and professionalism, including examining all relevant individuals and circumstances connected to Mohbad’s death.
