Guinea-Bissau Humiliate Super Eagles 3-0 as Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 Hopes Dims

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were beaten 3-0 by Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Bissau on Tuesday, a result that puts the three-time African champions under serious pressure in Group L.

Franculino Dju opened the scoring in the 15th minute, curling a shot into the far corner past Stanley Nwabali.

Nigeria pushed for an equaliser before the break, and Ademola Lookman forced a first-half save from goalkeeper Djoco Embadje. Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi and Akor Adams could not find a way through a disciplined home defence, and the Super Eagles went into the interval a goal down.

Coach Eric Chelle introduced Moses Simon and Moses Usor at half-time in search of a way back into the game, but the visitors struggled to create clear chances.

Mama Baldé doubled the lead in the 66th minute, and Alvaro Djalo sealed the win with virtually the last kick of the game, scoring in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Guinea-Bissau were dangerous on the counter throughout and punished Nigeria’s defensive lapses.

The defeat is especially costly because only one team from the group will qualify. Tanzania, a co-host of the tournament, have already secured their place at AFCON 2027, so Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar are fighting for the one remaining spot. Guinea-Bissau, who beat Tanzania 2-0 in their opener, now have a perfect start. Nigeria began with a 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar in Uyo on Friday.

The Super Eagles went into the match without Victor Osimhen, who was ruled out of both September qualifiers with a muscle injury. Guinea-Bissau have now beaten Nigeria twice in four meetings.

Their first win came in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers in Abuja, when Baldé scored the only goal. Nigeria won the return fixture 1-0 in Bissau.
