Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi is due to meet mediators in New York on Monday, as efforts to end the war between Iran and the United States continue alongside fresh warnings from Tehran.

Iran’s semi official ISNA news agency reported that Araghchi and his delegation would sit down with the mediators on Monday morning, New York time, to review the latest proposals and views on the situation. No American officials are expected at the meeting.

A source briefed on the talks told Reuters that Qatari mediators were likely to hold separate discussions with the US side on Monday or Tuesday, focused on an amended version of Iran’s seven day plan.

That plan was presented last week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Araghchi has described it as very reasonable, saying certain steps could be completed within four or five days, after which the Strait of Hormuz would reopen on the sixth day and talks on a final agreement would resume on the seventh. Iran is also demanding access to seized funds and goods, the freedom to sell its oil, and an end to the US naval blockade, along with sanctions relief.

The meeting comes days after President Donald Trump rejected the Iranian proposal. Araghchi told NBC on Sunday that Tehran was waiting for a definitive response through the mediators. He also said Iran was fully prepared for the war to resume and would confront any new aggression, “even if it comes to a doomsday war,” but insisted the door to diplomacy remained open and the choice was Trump’s.

Trump told Axios he expected new contacts with Iran this week and said more than 20 million barrels of oil had passed through the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, the highest volume since the war began.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Araghchi’s stay in New York had not been extended and that he would return to Tehran as originally planned.
