Woman Arrested for Allegedly Smuggling Alcohol to Inmate in Ogun Custodial Centre

A woman identified as Shobowale Balikis has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle alcohol into the Ibara Custodial Centre in Ogun State.

The suspect was reportedly intercepted by correctional officers at about 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, while allegedly trying to take the substance into the facility for an inmate.

The substance, identified as ethanol, was concealed inside a bottled water pack and disguised as drinking water.

Correctional officials detected the substance during screening before it could reach the inmate population.

Following her arrest, Balikis was handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Controller of Corrections in Ogun State, Abioye Adesina, said the incident reflected the command’s zero-tolerance policy toward the smuggling of contraband into custodial facilities.

He said the correctional service would continue to strengthen security measures to prevent the introduction of prohibited substances and other illegal items into its facilities.

The command also assured the public that it would sustain efforts to protect inmates, maintain discipline and safeguard the integrity of custodial centres.

The latest arrest comes weeks after another woman was detained for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs into the same custodial centre for her son, who is reportedly on death row.
