Grief Over Mother’s Death, Not New Album, Behind Kizz Daniel’s Recent Silence
Afrobeats star, Kizz Daniel has set the record straight on his recent absence from music, revealing that the pause was driven by grief rather than any secret album project, after losing his mother earlier this year.
The singer, born Oluwatobiloba Anidugbe, addressed the speculation directly on Friday while responding to a fan on X who had guessed that work on a new project explained his quiet spell.
He corrected the assumption plainly, explaining that he had stepped back to grieve his mother’s death and to stay strong for the rest of his family, while also apologising to fans for taking longer than usual to return to his music this year.
The clarification comes as something of a surprise given how prolific Kizz Daniel had appeared to be in the lead-up to his hiatus, having recently dropped his “Lemon Chase” EP, featuring collaborations with acts like Fola, Bella Shmurda and ODUMODUBLVCK, and even teased a follow-up project titled “Orange Chase” shortly after.
That pace had fuelled fan assumptions that his time away was tied to preparing new material rather than a personal loss.
This is not the first tragedy the singer has opened up about publicly. He has previously spoken about losing his father in 2015 and one of his triplets in 2021, and in an earlier interview revealed that his wife lost her own mother in 2024, an experience he has said shaped some of his more emotionally driven records.
He has not shared further details about his mother’s passing, including her name or cause of death.
Fans flooded his post with condolences and messages of support following the disclosure, with many expressing sympathy for the loss and thanking him for being open about what he had been through.
The singer, known for hits including “Woju,” “Buga” and “Twe Twe,” has yet to announce when he plans to return fully to releasing new music.
