Police Arrest Man Over Alleged Murder of Girlfriend in Enugu
The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Emmanuel, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend following an argument concerning HIV infection.
The suspect was arrested at his residence in Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, after the police received information about the alleged killing.
According to preliminary investigations, Emmanuel allegedly killed the woman, identified simply as Chinyere, on September 19, 2026, during an argument over allegations about who infected the other with HIV.
The police said the suspect allegedly struck the woman on the head with a pestle during the argument, resulting in her death.
After the incident, Emmanuel allegedly wrapped the woman’s body in nylon and concealed it inside the toilet of his apartment.
The decomposing body reportedly attracted the attention of neighbours after an offensive odour began coming from the apartment. The neighbours allegedly forced the door open and apprehended the suspect before police officers arrived.
Police operatives attached to the Awkunanaw Division subsequently rescued Emmanuel from an angry mob and took him into custody.
The deceased’s remains were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to identify and locate her relatives.
During preliminary questioning, the suspect allegedly confessed to the killing and told investigators that the incident followed an argument over claims surrounding HIV infection.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the case thoroughly.
The police said the suspect would be arraigned in court after investigations are concluded.
The command also advised members of the public, particularly young women, to inform trusted relatives or friends about their movements and exercise caution when visiting or spending time with others.
