The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for allowing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to carry out its responsibilities without interference.

The monarch made the commendation on Sunday, September 20, 2026, while speaking ahead of the 2026 Olojo Festival in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The Ooni said the independence of INEC was important to the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process, particularly as the country moves towards the 2027 general elections.

He also commended the people of Osun State for participating in the recently concluded governorship election, noting that elections provide citizens with an opportunity to choose their leaders.

According to the monarch, Nigeria’s interests should remain above political differences, urging politicians to prioritise national development, unity and the welfare of citizens.

The Ooni further called on political actors to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid actions capable of undermining the country’s democratic institutions.

His remarks came after his earlier engagement with the INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, during a visit to the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife in July. At the meeting, the monarch urged the electoral commission to remain impartial and ensure that Nigerians are allowed to freely choose their leaders.

The Ooni, who is also the Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, said he would use his seven-day spiritual seclusion ahead of the Olojo Festival to pray for Nigeria, including the country’s democratic process and the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu on Sunday commended INEC for its handling of recent legislative by-elections in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states, while urging the commission to sustain improvements and address areas requiring further attention.

The 2026 Olojo Festival is scheduled to hold in Ile-Ife from September 24 to 28, following the Ooni’s traditional seven-day spiritual seclusion.
