Italy to Ban Niqabs, Burqas in Schools, Meloni Announces

Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni has said her government will ban burqas and niqabs in schools. She also plans to set a legal limit on the number of foreign students allowed in each class.

Meloni made the announcement on Sunday while speaking to the youth wing of her Brothers of Italy party. She said a measure would soon be presented to the cabinet that includes these new rules.

Under the proposal, parents of foreign students who face serious difficulties integrating into the school system would also be required to learn Italian. Integration remains a key issue in Italy, a frontline country for migration, ahead of next year’s general election.

Italy currently has no specific law that bans full-face veils in schools or public places. A 1975 law restricts garments that make identification difficult, while a 2008 court ruling allows religious or cultural face coverings as long as the face can be shown when identity checks are needed.

A limit on foreign students per class already exists under Italian rules, generally set at 30 percent. Meloni did not explain exactly how the new maximum would change the current arrangement. Foreign students make up just under 12 percent of those enrolled in Italian schools.
