The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised concerns over a shortage of academic and non-academic staff at Imo State University, Owerri, warning that the situation could negatively affect the institution’s operations.

The union also expressed concern over the level of remuneration received by some categories of workers at the university, with reports indicating that some staff members earn as little as N50,000 monthly.

ASUU said the staffing situation had placed additional pressure on existing workers, making it difficult for the institution to effectively meet its academic and administrative responsibilities.

The union called for urgent measures to address the shortage and improve the welfare of workers at the university.

It also urged the relevant authorities to review the remuneration structure and ensure that employees receive pay that reflects their responsibilities and current economic realities.

According to the union, improving staff strength and welfare is essential to maintaining quality teaching, research and other academic activities.

ASUU further stressed the need for greater attention to the conditions under which university workers operate, warning that unresolved staffing and welfare challenges could affect the standard of education at the institution.

The union appealed to the state government and university authorities to take concrete steps towards addressing the concerns and creating a more sustainable working environment for staff.
