The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested and detained Inspector Monday Okonta for allegedly shooting a seven-year-old child during a stop-and-search operation.

The incident occurred along Abak Road in Uyo on September 11.

According to the police, officers of the Quick Response Squad stopped a vehicle carrying a family during a routine checkpoint. A smoke pistol was reportedly discharged, resulting in an injury to the left hand of the child who was inside the car.

Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter. The officer involved was identified, disarmed and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department pending the outcome of the probe.

The commissioner personally visited the injured child in hospital, interacted with the family and assured them that the case would be fully investigated. The child is said to be in stable condition and responding to treatment.

The command warned officers to carry out their duties professionally, especially during stop-and-search operations. It stated that it would not shield any officer found guilty of misconduct and that appropriate disciplinary and legal action would be taken if the investigation confirms wrongdoing.
