NNPC Introduces Pilot Self-Service Fuel Pumps

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has started rolling out self-service fuel pumps at selected NNPC Retail stations.

The new system allows motorists to buy and dispense petrol themselves using a mobile application.

The initiative is part of a plan to deploy between 50 and 70 smart self-service stations across the country within the next six months. Unlike the traditional method where an attendant handles the pump, customers can now complete the process on their phones.

Motorists first download the NRL Fuel App and select the type of fuel they want. They then choose a participating station, enter the amount they wish to spend, and pay through the app’s wallet. Once payment is confirmed, the app generates a digital receipt with a self-service code and QR code.

At the pump, the customer enters the code on the terminal to activate it and then dispenses the exact quantity of fuel paid for. The facility is currently available only at selected stations, which are marked with a green self-serve badge in the app.

NNPC officials said the smart stations form part of a broader plan to turn conventional filling stations into energy and mobility hubs. These locations are expected to offer additional services such as electric vehicle charging, liquefied petroleum gas and compressed natural gas in the future.
