One Killed, Two Rescued as Building Collapses During Demolition in Lagos
A man has died while two others were rescued after a two-storey building being manually demolished collapsed in the Aboru area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred around 12:56am on Thursday at No. 42 Governors Road, Aboru, in Alimosho Local Government Area.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday.
He said LASEMA’s Alpha Eagle Response Team was deployed to the location immediately after the agency received a distress call.
According to him, preliminary assessment showed that the structure gave way while demolition work was being carried out manually, trapping workers beneath the debris.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency activated the state’s Emergency Response Plan and coordinated the rescue effort alongside other emergency responders.
Two adult men were successfully pulled from the rubble alive and received emergency first aid from personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being transported to a nearby medical facility for further treatment.
However, one other adult male was found dead under the collapsed structure.
The permanent secretary expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
The rescue operation involved personnel from LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LASAMBUS.
The affected area was also cordoned off to safeguard residents and provide a secure working environment for emergency personnel.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged residents, property owners and developers to comply with approved building regulations and ensure that demolition and construction activities are handled by qualified professionals.
He also advised residents to promptly report buildings or activities they consider dangerous through the state’s emergency lines, 767 and 112.
He said the Lagos State Government was continuing efforts to strengthen emergency response operations, including the decentralisation of response units as part of its plan to achieve a 10-minute response time.
The latest incident comes less than three months after another building collapse in Lagos claimed eight lives and left 26 people rescued.
That incident occurred on June 25 at a three-storey building on Old Ojo Road, near Alakija Bus Stop, off the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Satellite Town.
