The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has launched the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO) to ensure the long-term sustainability of renewable energy projects across Nigeria.

The initiative is aimed at addressing the recurring problem of renewable energy infrastructure deteriorating after commissioning due to inadequate maintenance and the absence of effective asset management systems.

REA Managing Director Abba Aliyu said the agency has implemented several solar hybrid power projects in federal universities and teaching hospitals, but assessments showed that some facilities were no longer operating at their full capacity.

According to him, the challenge is largely linked to weak maintenance structures and the lack of sustainable funding mechanisms required to keep the projects running efficiently over time.

RAMCO will oversee the management, operation and maintenance of publicly funded renewable energy assets across the country.

The company will also handle metering, billing, revenue collection and the replacement of critical equipment when necessary.

The agency explained that the new structure is designed to ensure renewable energy projects remain functional and productive for many years without depending on repeated government intervention for repairs.

Beneficiary institutions are expected to contribute to the sustainability of the facilities through payments for electricity consumed, creating a funding system that supports maintenance and future upgrades.

Officials believe the initiative will also encourage greater private sector participation in the renewable energy industry by providing a more sustainable framework for managing energy infrastructure.

The REA said RAMCO forms part of broader efforts to expand access to electricity, strengthen the renewable energy sector and ensure that investments in clean energy continue to deliver long-term benefits for Nigerians.
