Yoruba Nation advocate Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, intervened on Tuesday to prevent police officers from arresting Isese advocate, Abdulazeez Adegbola, also known as Tani Olohun, at his residence in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The incident reportedly occurred after residents alerted Tani Olohun’s family that plainclothes officers were attempting to take him away.

Videos from the scene showed a confrontation outside his residence, with one of the officers seen holding Tani Olohun down while residents gathered and questioned the identity of the men.

The officers were reportedly wearing police vests and carrying firearms, but the fact that the vehicle they arrived in had no number plate raised concerns among residents.

One of the residents reportedly accused the men of being kidnappers who were posing as police officers and appealed for help to prevent Tani Olohun from being taken away.

Although one of the officers produced an identity card, some residents reportedly remained unconvinced about the authenticity of the operation.

Members of Tani Olohun’s family subsequently contacted Sunday Igboho, who arrived at the scene with some supporters.

During the incident, Igboho was seen speaking on the phone with a person identified as a senior official while explaining the situation at the scene.

He reportedly told the official that several officers were present and that tension had risen in the neighbourhood over the attempted arrest.

The phone was later handed to one of the officers at the request of the official on the other end of the call.

A subsequent video showed Tani Olohun seated on the ground after being released, with his clothes torn and his appearance visibly dishevelled.

He later expressed appreciation to several individuals and officials whom he said had intervened, including the commissioners of police in Kwara and Oyo states, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Sunday Igboho.

Tani Olohun particularly thanked Igboho for intervening and described him as someone who had consistently stood up for the Yoruba people.

The attempted arrest is connected to a criminal case filed against Tani Olohun by the Ilorin Heritage Preservation Foundation over a social media video allegedly mocking an Islamic prayer.

The group accused him of publishing the video on social media platforms and alleged that its content could provoke religious tension, encourage hostility towards Muslims and constitute contempt of religious beliefs.

The matter is currently before a court in Ilorin.

However, it was not immediately clear whether the officers who arrived at Tani Olohun’s Ibadan residence were acting on a valid warrant or a new court order.

The spokesperson for the Oyo State Police Command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed that the command was aware of the incident but declined to provide further details, saying a statement would be issued.

The incident has generated attention in Ibadan, particularly over the circumstances surrounding the attempted arrest and the intervention by Sunday Igboho.
