American Christian missionary, Kevin Rideout has been released into the custody of US officials after spending more than nine months in captivity in Niger.

Rideout’s organisation, SIM International, confirmed his release on Friday, saying the missionary was in good health and would soon be reunited with his family.

SIM International Director, Phil Bauman expressed gratitude over Rideout’s release, describing him as a friend and brother in Christ.

Rideout was abducted on October 21, 2025, outside his residence in Niger’s capital, Niamey. Reports said three unidentified men carried out the abduction before fleeing towards the western Tillaberi region, an area affected by the activities of Islamist militant groups.

Following the kidnapping, the US Embassy in Niger increased its security measures and warned American citizens about heightened kidnapping risks in the country.

Reports indicate that Rideout is currently in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), although authorities have not disclosed details about how he was released, the circumstances surrounding his captivity or the identities of those responsible for his abduction.

Niger has continued to face serious security challenges, with militant groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and Islamic State operating in areas around its borders.

SIM International said Rideout’s health remained stable and expressed hope that his return would soon allow him to reunite with his family after more than nine months in captivity.
