One person has been killed and another injured following a shooting in Esa-Oke, Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, amid heightened political activities ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The deceased was reportedly a supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a nephew of the Director-General of the APC Campaign Council and member of the House of Representatives, Oluwole Oke.

The second victim, who was also reportedly shot during the incident on Wednesday, was said to be in critical condition.

The Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Police Command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the death but declined to provide details on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the APC Campaign Council, Oluremi Omowaye, alleged that members of rival political parties were responsible for the attacks.

Omowaye claimed that the victims were targeted for wearing APC caps, alleging that about 40 APC members had been killed, although the claim was not independently verified.

He further alleged that three other APC supporters were attacked in Atakumosa East Local Government Area.

However, the Osun State Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, rejected the allegation that members of the Accord Party were behind the attacks.

Alimi described the claim as false and unsubstantiated, saying it was an attempt to discredit and blackmail the Accord Party.

The incident comes as political activities intensify across Osun ahead of the August 15 governorship election, with parties trading allegations over politically motivated violence in parts of the state.
