Unai Emery’s remarkable record in the UEFA Europa League stands in stark contrast to his struggles in the UEFA Super Cup, following Aston Villa’s 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Salzburg on Wednesday.

The loss means Emery has now suffered defeat in all four of his UEFA Super Cup appearances, maintaining an unwanted 100 per cent losing record in the competition.

PSG took the lead before Villa teenager Brian Madjo equalised shortly before half-time, becoming the youngest player to score in the history of the Super Cup. Désiré Doué, however, restored the French side’s advantage after the break to secure another European trophy for PSG.

The defeat came only months after Emery led Aston Villa to the Europa League title, guiding the club to a 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the final and securing his fifth triumph in the competition.

Emery’s five Europa League titles have come with three different clubs. He won the competition three consecutive times with Sevilla between 2014 and 2016, added another title with Villarreal in 2021 and claimed his fifth with Villa in 2026.

UEFA recognises the Spaniard as the most successful manager in Europa League history, with six final appearances and five victories.

His record in the Super Cup, however, tells a completely different story.

Emery’s first appearance came in 2014, when Sevilla lost 2-0 to Real Madrid. Sevilla returned to the final the following year but suffered another defeat, going down 5-4 to Barcelona after extra time.

In 2021, Emery had another opportunity after leading Villarreal to Europa League glory. The Spanish side drew 1-1 with Chelsea after extra time before losing 6-5 on penalties.

His fourth appearance produced the same outcome, with Aston Villa unable to overcome PSG despite Madjo’s historic equaliser.

While the latest defeat adds to Emery’s unusual Super Cup record, it does little to diminish his achievements in European competition. His Europa League success with Villa ended the club’s long wait for major silverware and further cemented his reputation as one of the competition’s greatest managers.
