The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has warned motorists and other road users against violating traffic regulations, saying offenders will face legal action as the command intensifies enforcement across the state.

The warning was contained in a statement issued on Friday in Uyo by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, who said the enforcement exercise would continue across all 31 local government areas.

The command said the exercise was designed to improve order on the roads, reduce preventable accidents, safeguard lives and property, and ensure the smooth movement of people and vehicles.

According to the statement, officers will focus on offences including driving against traffic, operating vehicles without valid documents or a driver’s licence, and using covered, concealed, defaced or unauthorised number plates.

The police also listed the use of unregistered vehicles, motorcycles and tricycles among the violations that would attract enforcement.

The command urged motorists, commercial drivers, motorcyclists and tricycle operators to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and that all required documents remain valid before using public roads.

It warned that ignorance of traffic laws would not be accepted as an excuse and that anyone arrested for violating the regulations would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

John said Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, traffic personnel and other operational units had been instructed to maintain and strengthen enforcement within their jurisdictions.

She, however, said officers had been directed to conduct the exercise professionally and respectfully, stressing that extortion, harassment, unnecessary delays and other forms of misconduct would not be tolerated.

The command urged all road users to cooperate with its personnel and comply with traffic regulations to promote safer and more orderly roads across Akwa Ibom State.
