The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has advised prospective candidates for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) to verify the accuracy of their National Identification Number (NIN) records before commencing registration.

The Board gave the advice in its recent “JAMB Explained” series, urging candidates to confirm their personal information with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) before creating their JAMB profiles.

JAMB specifically advised candidates to check the spelling and order of their names, dates of birth and other details linked to their NIN records to ensure they are accurate.

The Board explained that the information displayed on candidates’ JAMB profiles is pulled directly from the NIN database maintained by NIMC and is not independently created by JAMB.

It therefore warned candidates against assuming that errors on their NIN records would automatically be corrected on the JAMB platform, noting that obtaining an affidavit alone would not result in an immediate amendment.

Candidates who discover discrepancies were advised to first approach NIMC and follow the prescribed procedure for correcting their personal information before proceeding with JAMB profile creation and examination registration.

The Board stressed that candidates should ensure that the details submitted for JAMB registration are consistent with their NIMC records, particularly their names and dates of birth.

JAMB also noted that candidates who need to amend certain personal details can use its Correction of Data service, which covers information such as names, date of birth, state or local government of origin and gender, subject to the relevant procedures and applicable charges.

The Board urged prospective UTME and DE candidates to address any discrepancies well ahead of registration, saying early verification and correction of records could help prevent complications during the admission process.
