President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with about 250,000 officers and soldiers expected to benefit from the new pay structure.

The salary adjustment, which takes effect from September 1, is aimed at improving the welfare of military personnel and strengthening the country’s security architecture.

Under the new package, officers above the rank of colonel—including brigadier-generals, major-generals, lieutenant-generals and generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase. Officers from the rank of colonel down to warrant officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while personnel from private to staff sergeant will receive an 80 per cent increase.

The Federal Government said the new salary structure will raise the annual wage bill for the armed forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.

Announcing the approval in a statement on Tuesday, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the increase reflects the administration’s commitment to rewarding the sacrifices of military personnel in the fight against banditry, kidnapping and terrorism across the country.

President Tinubu said members of the armed forces deserve greater support for their dedication to protecting Nigerians and safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity.

“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.

He added that his administration would continue to prioritise troop welfare while modernising the armed forces through the provision of weapons and advanced technological tools needed to enhance operational effectiveness.

According to the President, national security remains central to Nigeria’s development, stressing that no country can attain greatness without ensuring the safety of lives and property.

Tinubu also assured Nigerians that his administration would continue to mobilise military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats nationwide.

He urged members of the armed forces to regard the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service and commitment to the nation.

“Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he said.
