NIWA Intensifies Waterways Safety Campaign in Abuja

The National Inland Waterways Authority has stepped up efforts to promote safety and environmental protection among waterfront communities in Abuja.

The campaign comes as the rainy season peaks, bringing higher water levels and increased pollution risks.

The NIWA Abuja Area Office held a Marine Safety and Environmental Protection Campaign in Abaji Area Council. Officials emphasised safe navigation practices and the need to protect the waterways for the benefit of residents who depend on them.

Abuja Area Manager, Aisha Eri thanked the host communities for their cooperation. She assured them of the agency’s continued commitment to safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and the nation’s inland waters.

The Emir of Kwali, Alhaji Adamu Aguma, and other district heads attended the event. They pledged full support for the safety measures and promised to encourage compliance within their communities.

The sensitisation forms part of a nationwide directive from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy. NIWA plans to extend the campaign to other waterfront communities around the Federal Capital Territory in the coming days.
